While many couples envision a honeymoon spent lounging on a coastline or tucked away in a forest retreat, we opted to fully embrace our inner children. Universal Studios was our definitive choice for a getaway; as enthusiasts of film and gaming, we knew it would be an incredible experience to finally visit together as adults.
Our initial logistical hurdle was securing an affordable trip. By bundling our airport parking, airfare, lodging, and park admission into a single package, we maximized our savings. Over our seven-day, six-night stay, we utilized the perks of our on-site resort, which included expedited queue access via our room key and daily complimentary meals. Staying within the Universal grounds was a game-changer, as the five-minute walk to the park entrance made commuting via foot or water taxi incredibly convenient.
Preparation involved careful packing; we each limited ourselves to one suitcase to save on fees, focusing on essentials like swimwear, shorts, and tees. A crucial piece of advice: bring reliable walking shoes and sandals, as the amount of walking is substantial—don’t forget to stretch!
Before departing, we also had to handle the administrative side of things, such as requesting leave from work, settling upcoming bills, and arranging for house and pet sitting. We enlisted a friend to watch our cat, compensating him with the contents of our pantry—a currency highly valued by college students—which also granted him the luxury of his own bathroom.
We strategically scheduled our honeymoon for June 2011, shortly after our April wedding. This timing aligned perfectly with the conclusion of the academic year, as I was working in an elementary school and had a gap between my positions. This was also an extra-special trip, as it coincided with my birthday.
Exploring the park was a highlight, particularly because the Harry Potter section had just debuted. As a die-hard fan, I spent nearly two full days immersed in that area alone, while my husband gravitated toward the Jurassic Park attractions. Our shared passion for roller coasters also meant we made sure to ride every thrill attraction multiple times.
The dining experience was equally memorable. The bacon cheeseburger at our hotel was, without hyperbole, the best I have ever encountered—perfectly seasoned and incredibly succulent. Beyond the park, we indulged in a variety of local deliveries, including pizza, pasta, and seafood. We are unabashed foodies who truly relished every bite.
Ultimately, the trip was exactly what we needed: a chance to unwind, enjoy ourselves, and share quality time in the wake of our wedding.
Universal Studios is so much fun. Harry Potter is my favorite, but it’s always so crowded. Best to stay at a Universal hotel so you can get the early admission.
