Whether you want a beautiful display cake for your wedding or to add to your coffee bar without spending a fortune this project is for you!  Naked cakes are lovely, they are classic and will not likely go out of fashion anytime soon. I spent a little over $10 in supplies at Hobby Lobby and bought a $1 can of lightweight spackle to create this gorgeous succulent cake to display on my table and give it a little pizazz.


Lightweight spackle

Paper mache hat boxes

Hot glue gun and sticks
Measure even lines and draw layers on your cake lightly with a pencil.

First Step:

Remove the lids from your boxes, put them aside for another project we won’t be needing them.

Since these are naked cakes and you will be able to see at least some of the “Cake” inside we want to paint them so that they look realistic. To make a vanilla cake I mixed some tan, brown, red, and a bit of yellow acrylic paint until I was satisfied with the results.

Second Step:

Use scissors or a straight edge to score the lines and give your cake layers, they don’t have to be exactly perfect, real cakes aren’t.
Since these are naked cakes and you will be able to see at least some of the “Cake” inside we want to paint them so that they look realistic. To make a vanilla cake I mixed some tan, brown, red, and a bit of yellow acrylic paint until I was satisfied with the results.
Allow the paint to dry completely.

Third Step:

Paint the top and sides of your hat boxes until completely covered. While the base paint is still wet, dry brush some brown paint here and there, especially where the edges would naturally brown a bit more in the oven.
Allow the paint to dry completely.
Grab your cake scraper and begin covering the flat top and sides of your cake with a generous amount of spackling, cover it well. Now you want to immediately scrape most of it off and leave just a scant amount of “Frosting” on your cake. Keep it slightly thicker in some places, it really gives it an authentic look.

Fourth Step:

Add hot glue around the bottom rim of your smaller layer and center on the larger layer to secure it in place.
Grab your cake scraper and begin covering the flat top and sides of your cake with a generous amount of spackling, cover it well. Now you want to immediately scrape most of it off and leave just a scant amount of “Frosting” on your cake. Keep it slightly thicker in some places, it really gives it an authentic look.
Let the spackle dry for a few hours.

Fifth Step:

You have a good 15 minutes to layer,scrape, and play with it before your spackling starts to dry and isn’t as easy to work with.
Let the spackle dry for a few hours.
Add your cake to a pretty pedastal cake stand and I bet it will fool everyone into thinking it’s real, and you didn’t even have to turn on the oven!

Last Step:

Now, grab your fake succulents and try them out in different spots until you are happy with the way it looks. Once you have it laid out in your mind attach them with hot glue.
